Are you interested in becoming a reading or math tutor VOLUNTEER? Are you interested in helping people? Consider becoming a reading or math tutor VOLUNTEER. You will be asked to donate two hours per week in a reading or math classroom or with an individual student. Tutor-Training is a 12-hour course in February:
RESERVE your place by February 4. Call 734-246-4633. English Classes for the Foreign Born (ESL) English for Foreign Born classes teach listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for those adults whose primary language is not English. Winter 2010 Daytime Classes:
Winter 2010 Evening Classes:
ESL BEGINNING - In a comfortable and encouraging atmosphere, adults whose primary language is not English will learn the basic patterns of written and spoken English language. ESL CONVERSATIONAL GRAMMAR – Students will learn grammar forms and meaning in a variety of contexts and have conversation on many different subjects to use grammar. ESL READING – Students taking this course will learn how to identify main ideas and use context clues to define meanings in paragraphs and short writings. ESL SPEAKING/LISTENING – Students will learn how to express needs, wants, and desires using standard spoken English. Students will learn how to vary sentence structure, use of punctuation, and standard grammar and spelling. ESL VOCABULARY – Students will learn words and phrases they are likely to encounter, then have the opportunity to practice these words in spoken and written scenarios. ESL WRITING – Students will learn how to write simple to complex forms of sentences with an emphasis on the use of standard English written grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Please note: ESL registration is a two-day process. On the first day, you will take an introductory test and complete the paperwork. You will be scheduled for an appointment on a second day to take another test, which will determine your placement in proper ESL class. Translators are welcome to come with you the first day to help with the paperwork. Adult Basic Education (ABE) This program is designed for ADULTS who want to improve their basic reading, writing, spelling, and math skills. Winter 2010 Daytime Classes:
